This morning I was reflecting on how quickly life flies by. It led me to remember a quote from Ferris Buehler’s Day Off.
“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
Ferris Buehler
It’s too easy to get caught up in the busyness and move from one thing to the next without pausing to catch your breath and give your soul space just to be. This is especially true in the northeast, as the pace never lets up.
As Christians, we cannot be like everyone else and allow ourselves to be swept away by currents of culture while we have the Spirit of the risen Jesus, Holy Spirit, living in us.
He longs for our attention and affection, not because He is needy or selfish, but because He knows that in our communion with Him, we are transformed and changed into His image.
It says in Proverbs 20:27, “The spirit God breathed into man is like a living lamp, a shining light searching into the innermost chambers of our being.”
Our interior life is essential to God, and it should be equally important to us. It requires deliberate intent and choice to carve out time to spend quietly with the Lord without distraction. Schedule it on your calendar like you would a date with a friend. Start small and expand as you go.
Daily showing up is the most significant battle because it usually doesn’t feel amazing, but through consistent time in God’s Word and prayer, your inner man will strengthen and grow.
Stephen Venable reminds us that change in our inner man is measured in months and years. So commit yourself to consistent quiet time with the Lord for at least 3-6 months before you evaluate its effectiveness.
Then you can be a person of wisdom; as Proverbs 20:5 says, “A man of deep understanding will give good advice, drawing it out from the well within.” We can only draw from what has been deposited through regular feeding on the Word of God and through fellowship with Holy Spirit.
Lord, give us the grace to schedule regular time with You so we can feed on Your Word and enjoy Your presence. Fill and strengthen us as only You can and bring healing and wholeness to the deepest places of our being in Jesus’ name. Amen.
