A HIGHER PERSPECTIVE

A few weeks ago, the kids and I met up with a longtime friend and her kids for a hike. We decided to try a different route than we were used to, leading to a challenging rock climbing adventure.

As usual, the kids motored ahead with ease and determination while I had to make frequent stops to catch my breath. I considered quitting as we neared the summit. Everyone ascended to the top to admire the ruins, and I sat resting and admiring my view (the picture above).

It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers,

Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.

Isaiah 40:22

It was refreshing to get an aerial view of the area around me. I was amazed at how high we had traveled and the scenic view. It was peaceful and quiet, and I soaked up every moment. The once enormous lake appeared like a pond. Trees that seemed to be daunting were now like standing sticks. Matchbox-looking cars drove on the highways we traveled to get here. I needed the higher altitude to give me space to take deep breaths and be inspired by the expansive view. The rest and view gave me renewed hope and a ‘pep in my step’ to descend the mountain with a fresh perspective.

I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come?

2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

Psalm 121:1-2

I have needed a higher perspective several times over the past couple of weeks as the barrage of challenges kept coming and people were hurting all around me. I couldn’t get weighed down by all the challenges or stay burdened long. I needed to connect with the Lord and focus on how big and mighty He is and how faithful He has been and always will be. I committed each person and situation into His trusting hands.

For the mountains shall depart

And the hills be removed,

But My kindness shall not depart from you,

Nor shall My covenant of peace be removed,”

Says the Lord, who has mercy on you.

Isaiah 54:10

It has been praying in the Spirit that has been key in this season. I’m learning to discipline myself to engage in praying in the Spirit as often as possible throughout my days (and nights). I’m training myself to fill spare moments with prayer instead of checking my phone and scrolling mindlessly or wasting time in other ways.

Intense seasons require greater focus and discipline, so it is wise to assess whether I prioritize the necessary life-giving and spirit-energizing activities for my current season. I am responsible for stewarding my body, soul, spirit, and no one else.

Let’s be intentional to prioritize self-care and guard our times of life-giving intimacy with the Lord so we walk victoriously through all life’s challenges and carry the fragrance of Jesus as we do.
